Class AAA semifinals: No. 1 Lakeville North 2, No. 5 Mounds View 1 (SO, 4-3)
Playing from behind isn't a characteristic that the Lakeville North girls soccer team has needed throughout a season that now has it on the threshold of program history.
But the top-seed Panthers had to do so on Thursday, recording a 2-1 victory over No. 5 Mounds View.
The Panthers (16-1-2) scored late in regulation time to force extra play, and when overtime couldn't produce a winner, Lakeville North responded again with a 4-3 victory in the tie-breaking procedure to advance to the big-school championship game for the second time in school history. As just Lakeville High School, the Panthers were the Class AA runners-up in 2004.
"It hasn't been a persistent issue," Lakeville North coach Marco Campoverde said. "We have had moments, though, when we've needed to be resilient."
The Panthers needed a goal from junior forward Ally Pluta with 15 minutes remaining in regulation time to pull even with upset-minded Mounds View.
Following two scoreless overtime sessions, Lakeville North won the shootout procedure, 4-3. Senior defender Sasha Petrov scored the clinching goal in the shootout to set off a victorious mob pile on the turf.
"I knew I was going to make it because I practice," she said. "I took a deep breath and passed it in. I knew I needed to do it for my team."
Mounds View (17-3-1) had taken a 1-0 lead in just more than a minute into the second half on a goal from junior midfielder Ida Wynn.
In the early going, it appeared Lakeville North wouldn't be faced with having to mount a comeback. Senior midfielder Jamie Beardsley scored on a free kick that had deflected in off a Mounds View player. But the goal was disallowed because of offside.
