The top two boys basketball teams in the Mid-Willamette Conference will face off Tuesday night in Silverton.
The second-ranked Foxes (12-1, 4-0) are set to host No. 8 South Albany (11-3, 4-0) in a pivotal midseason showdown. Silverton and South hold a one-game lead over No. 9 Central (11-3, 3-1) in the MWC standings.
The Rebels, who are 5-0 in the month of January, defeated Central 59-45 last week. South also owns league victories over Woodburn (77-60), Lebanon (66-48) and Crescent Valley (66-62), the reigning MWC champion.
Silverton has won six straight games since a 63-52 loss to California’s Mater Dei at the Capital City Classic in Salem.
South is 3-1 in its last four matchups with the Foxes.
CV (7-7, 2-2) and Dallas (3-10, 2-2) are locked in a tie for fourth after four conference games. Lebanon (2-12, 1-3) is alone in sixth while Corvallis (4-10, 0-4) and Woodburn (4-10, 0-4) are in the basement.
MWC girls race is top heavy
The MWC continues to be well represented in the 5A girls basketball power rankings.
No. 2 Central (13-1, 4-0), No. 5 Silverton (11-3, 4-0), No. 7 Lebanon (11-2, 2-2) and No. 9 Crescent Valley (12-2, 3-1) are all in the top 10 entering Tuesday’s games. The Foxes travel to South Albany (5-9, 1-3) while Lebanon hosts Corvallis (4-10, 1-3) and CV welcomes Woodburn (1-12, 0-4).
The Panthers, who will host Silverton on Friday, are at Dallas (7-6, 1-3) Wednesday night.
Bulldogs move up
The West Albany girls basketball team, which had dropped four straight games earlier this month, earned two victories last week over McKay (76-32) and South Salem (82-72).
The Bulldogs (8-8, 4-4) enter Tuesday’s home matchup with Sprague (7-8, 2-6) in a tie with West Salem (6-9, 4-4) for fifth in the Greater Valley Conference. The GVC’s top four teams automatically qualify for the 6A state playoffs.
West Albany will host West Salem on Feb. 20 to close the regular season. The Titans won the first meeting 64-60.
Busy wrestling week
The annual MWC wrestling dual between South Albany and Lebanon will be contested Thursday night at Bud Page Activity Center.
The Rebels won last year’s matchup 35-27 in Albany.
West Albany will be hosting the Tod Surmon Invitational on Saturday. Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
Also on Saturday, South Albany is putting on the Mid Valley Classic. The annual tournament starts at 10 a.m.
West Albany’s Ethan Pohlschneider was 43rd in the men’s giant slalom on Saturday in an Oregon School Ski Association race at Mt. Bachelor.
Pohlschneider was 32nd in the slalom on Jan. 17.
