NEW YORK CITY - Oregon State football was center stage this morning in Manhattan as the Beavers were one of 10 collegiate football teams to have their Nike Pro Combat uniforms unveiled.
The Beavers, the only team to participate from the Pacific-10 Conference, will wear their Pro Combat uniform on Dec. 4 in the Civil War against Oregon.
The jersey is an ode to the Oregon State "Giant Killers" team from 1967. As described by Nike, an orange, called Solar Orange, is the "predominant motif, seen on the helmet, base layer sleeves, pants and socks.
"To match the archival dirtied white look of '67, the pant color is Sail instead of stark white. An iconic ‘O' mark is used on the front left hip of the pant, while ‘OSU' forms on the gloves when the palms face outward."
Steve Preece, Oregon State, a key member of Oregon State's 1967 team known as the "Giant Killers" presented the Beavers' uniform. Preece went on to a successful career as defensive back with the Los Angeles Rams.
The participating schools all rank in the preseason top 25. The teams plan to wear the uniquely designed uniforms for the games listed below and any other games they may determine at a later date: the University of Alabama (Nov. 13), Boise State University (Sept. 6), University of Florida (Oct. 30), University of Miami (Nov. 20), The Ohio State University (Nov. 27), Oregon State University (Dec. 4), University of Pittsburgh (Nov. 26), TCU (Sept. 4), Virginia Tech (Sept. 6) and West Virginia University (Nov. 26).
