Let's look at the irrational fear of additional taxes if Medicare For All were to be enacted.
What if you no longer paid insurance premiums, co-pays or deductibles? What if you didn't have to live in fear that some catastrophic illness would overtake you before you turn 65? What if vision, dental and mental health were also covered by that single tax?
Current Medicare addresses only basic medical needs; the new plan would be inclusive. What if you no longer had to stay stuck in a job you don't want in order to keep medical coverage? Or live in fear that you'll lose your job and with it coverage for your family?
The opposition — in the form of Big Pharma and Big Insurance — dangle the specter of more taxes in front of you to distract you from their profit making, to make you fear change. We should not fear paying taxes for universal coverage which buys peace of mind — the most important adjunct of good health.
All other industrialized countries have figured this out; the only reason it still hasn't prevailed in the U.S. is that illness and injury are profitable and people expendable.
Wake up, America! Vote for the candidates who are in favor of universal health care. Vote fear and terror out.
