I am in complete agreement with Gary Hartman (Mailbag, Nov. 29) in his reply to Doug Bauer (Mailbag, Nov. 26) regarding the National Rifle Association. I am not a member of the NRA so I don't have a personal dog in the fight. But, I am a hunter and a responsible gun owner.
For years the NRA has publicly supported gun ownership for responsible citizens through a myriad of safety programs. From the Eddie Eagle program for young enthusiasts through the new Carry Guard program, which includes comprehensive safety training for those that wish to conceal carry. They offer training and safety classes for responsible men and women alike. The NRA deplores illegal firearm activity and is not the criminal's best friend as Mr. Bauer's letter suggests.
The NRA does not put guns in the hands of the mentally disturbed that perpetrate these horrific events. Quite the contrary. Thanks to violent TV, video games, etc. that glamorize violence, many in our country have adopted this way of life. The NRA fights this corruption on a daily basis.
So, Mr. Bauer, before you continue to rant, the Second Amendment is a right of all citizens. Unfortunately, some have chosen to abuse this right. Do some research; the NRA supports law-abiding citizens and is not to blame for those who chose violence as a way of life.
