Mailbag: Newspaper coverage vital to arts community

On behalf of the singers and board of the Corvallis Repertory Singers and our audience of some 1,000 subscribers and concertgoers, we are writing to share our greatest appreciation for Mike McInally as editor of the Gazette-Times and Democrat-Herald, as well as his ongoing passion and publication of The E section for arts and entertainment. The E is the only publication like it in our community. As an arts organization, we depend on The E for local coverage of the variety of events for Corvallis-Albany audiences.

Our group is very concerned that The E continue at the same level written and published by Mr. McInally. Mr. McInally’s articles were thorough and well-written. They helped our audiences know the “story” behind the music. Even as a nonprofit, our organization committed several thousand dollars each season to advertise in your newspaper and The E specifically. However, it was always Mr. McInally’s articles that motivated our audiences to attend.

While we understand that decisions such as eliminating Mr. McInally’s position are financially driven in the short term, the long term may be even more devastating to the overall viability of our local community newspaper.
