In reply to Larry Ciaffoni's s letter (Mailbag, Feb. 18), in which he states "The only people who will be punished by the passage of SB 501 will be law-abiding citizens," I would like to know how background checks and his inability to obtain an assault weapon (another proposed gun law) will be a punishment for him. Will you suffer if you can't obtain an assault rifle weapon of war? And please don't tell us that you need an AR-15 for hunting animals. Will you suffer punishment because you can't have one? What scares you about a background check? You mentioned the horrific shooting in Aurora, Illinois, but what about the myriad of shootings by domestic terrorists ("normal" men who are driven by anger and hate)? You suffer at the mere prospect of being "punished" by any form of sensible gun laws to protect the rest of us.
America is awash in guns and blood. A June 2018 study tells us there are 393 million guns in America, or enough for every man, woman, and child to own one and have 67 million guns left over! 79% of Americans, Republican and Democratic, favor more strict gun laws. Statistics tell us that America has more shootings on a weekend than most developed countries have in a year. Does this not frighten you, Mr. Ciaffoni?
