I read Richard Hirschi's reply (Mailbag, Dec. 28), as well as his original letter. Mr. Hirschi doesn't seem to realize that just putting together associated facts do not make a logical argument. His reasoning is similar to my saying: The sun rises in the morning; the sun rises in the summer. Therefore, every time that the sun rises, it is summer. Yes, the two statements are facts. They are also related. They don't make the conclusion true, though.
I invite anyone interested in what makes a logical argument true, and what doesn't, to look at this web link: https://bit.ly/2R4agdS.
They do an excellent job of explaining the subject.
