In reference to Louis A. Lehman's letter (Mailbag, March 1):
I, too, find it appalling that livestock in the Willamette Valley do not have shelter for both cold and hot weather. To shear sheep in the middle of winter is cruel and needless, especially since they are given no place to stay warm. Legislation is needed to provide laws on the treatment of farm animals. Perhaps Mahatma Gandhi said it best: "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way in which its animals are treated."
