Firefighters from Sweet Home, Lebanon and Brownsville battle a blaze Wednesday morning that destroyed a home and shop on North River Drive.

SWEET HOME — An early morning fire destroyed a house and shop early Wednesday morning in the 41000 block of North River Drive.

Personnel from Sweet Home, Lebanon and Brownsville were called to the fire at about 3:43 a.m., according to Sweet Home Fire Chief Dave Barringer, who said a neighbor reported the fire, which appeared to have started in a shop/outbuilding and spread to the house.

Owners James and Karen Davis escaped unharmed.

“Mr. Davis said he heard what sounded like an explosion earlier in the morning. He went outside and into the shop, but didn’t see anything,” Barringer said.

Battalion Chief Randy Whitfield was the first firefighter on scene and said the house was involved when he arrived.

According to Barringer, both the house and shop were damaged extensively. and that both appeared to be a total loss. The shop's metal roof collapsed, making damage difficult to access. The fire spread into the attic and main structure of the home.

About 13 firefighters from Sweet Home, nine from Lebanon and one from Brownsville worked at the scene. There also were numerous apparatus from all three departments on the second-alarm fire.
