SWEET HOME — Stephen Maurice Bass, 61, of Toledo died Sunday afternoon, after it appears he fell down a cliff near Gordon Meadows east of Cascadia, according to Linn County Undersheriff Jim Yon.

Yon said the 911 dispatch center received a call from Martha Linda Leech, 55, who said her male companion had fallen to the bottom of a cliff and she believed he was dead.

When deputies and Linn County Search and Rescue personnel arrived, they saw Bass’s body approximately 100 feet below a log landing at the base of a cliff.

A search and rescue team member was able to traverse the steep slope, reached Bass and confirmed that he was dead.

Due to the approaching darkness and the rugged terrain, the scene was secured overnight due to hazardous conditions, Yon said.

Bass’ body was recovered by Corvallis Mountain Rescue and Linn County Search and Rescue personnel on Monday.

The investigation of the cause of death is ongoing.

Linn County Sheriff's Deputies were assisted by Linn County Search and Rescue, Corvallis Mountain Rescue and the Linn County Medical Examiner's Office.

Bass' body was taken to Sweet Home Funeral Chapel.
