Malcolm L. “Sonny” Richterof Albany went home to the Lord on Feb. 1.
Sonny came from DeFuniak Springs, Fla., son of the late Rev. Malcolm Lee Richter and Lola Womble Richter. By age 15 he was playing guitar professionally. He first recorded in 1948, and would perform and record into the early 1990s.
Many musicians sought his talents. Sonny played with many artists from the country and jazz fields including Jimmy Bryant, Tiny Moore, Roy Nichols, Merle Travis, Ray Price and even Elvis Presley.
Before retiring, Sonny took up gospel music with Bill Bledsoe, touring Idaho schools and put on guitar clinics for kids.
He was preceded in death by both parents; two sisters, O'Dee and Rose; two children, Bradley and Denise; and grandson Joseph.
He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy; her children, Charles, Victor, Paul and Tamara; sons Randy, Scott and Daryl; daughter Lonna; sisters Vivian, Gertrude, Marie; and brother Dorsey. He also leaves behind several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
