LeRoy Marvin Russell, 89, of Alsea, passed away February 28, 2018, at home on his family farm surrounded by his loved ones.
LeRoy was born October 26, 1928 to Marvin and Elsie (Orem) Russell. He was the third of four children, having three sisters — Betty, Lorraine and Alene.
He arrived in the valley and attended Alsea School when he was 14 years old, graduating in 1947.
He worked for Alsea Lumber Company until leaving for the US Army in 1950. He served during the Korean War and was discharged in 1952. Upon returning from the Army, he worked again for Alsea Lumber Company.
He married Barbara Sapp on June 13, 1953. They had three children — Robin, Sally and Nancy (Puff).
He later started falling timber and worked for Shroyer and Willamette Industries with partners Jack Bowen, Gary Strom, Jerry Curtis, Dan Winney, and Davie Hansen. Upon retiring from timber falling, he ran Tom’s, the family grocery market, with his wife until they both retired and sold the store.
He was a proud member of the Pioneer Telephone Co-op Board of Directors for 30 years.
He was the eldest member of the Church of Christ in Lobster Valley.
He was a kind and gentle man with quiet dignity, honor, courage and compassion. A selfless, caring man, who always placed the needs of others first, rarely asking for himself. His was truly a life well-lived.
He spent his life dedicated to his family, going to Alsea sporting events, camping, hunting, and fishing trips. He loved his family farm.
He married Jean Hendrix on January 1, 2006.
He is survived by his wife, Jean; son, Rob (Pamela); daughter, Sally (Scott); six grandchildren, Tim, Tiffany, Adrian, Bailey, Zach and Riley; and six great-grandchildren, Carson, Dillon, Kelsey, Sydney, Brady and Brayden.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Elsie; wife Barbara; daughter, Nancy; and sisters, Betty, Lorraine and Alene.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. on March 24, 2018 at the Lobster Valley Cemetery (Charles O. Hendrix Memorial Garden).
