Donald E. “Don” Persons, 99, of Lebanon died Wednesday at Avamere Rehabilitation of Lebanon.
He was born in Mankato, Minn., to Andrew and Amanda (Sandel) Persons.
Don grew up in Mankato. He was always a hard worker and actually left high school early so he could work to help support his family. He married Fern Jones on Feb. 21, 1935, in Judson, Minn. Don entered the Army in 1945 and served during the end of World War II. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Mankato, where he built the family home by himself with one horse and a scoop.
He got tired of shoveling snow and moved to Newport Beach, Calif., where he loved to swim in the ocean. He came to Lebanon in 1970, where he has lived since. Don was a floor layer and cabinet maker for most of his working life until retiring when he was in his 80s. He loved woodworking.
He was a charter member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, where he was very active and helped wherever there was a need.
Don is survived by wife Fern Persons of Lebanon; sons Chester Persons and wife Carole of Santa Maria, Calif., Ric Persons of Lebanon, and Mark Persons and wife Patty of Waterloo; daughters Becky Nelson and husband Craig of Albany, and Judith Persons of Fountain Valley, Calif.; grandchildren Vicci, Kelley, Corey, Sean, Jason, Oliver, Geoffrey, Jonathan and Neal; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brother Vernon Persons, and sisters Vivian Persons and Ione Schumann.
Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church.
