The Linn County Sheriff's Office has identified the victim in the fatal motor vehicle crash this morning at Seven Mile Lane and Columbus Street near Albany.
Anna Dirjke Evan, 77, of Albany, was crossing the road to get her newspaper at about 6:39 a.m., while it was still dark outside, and was struck and killed by an eastbound 2012 Dodge Ram pickup.
The incident closed Seven Mile Lane and rerouted school bus traffic for several hours until the scene was cleared.
Russell Buttram, director of transportation for Greater Albany Public Schools, said nine children in the area are eligible for bus transportation, although not all take advantage of it.
"There were a couple of houses we couldn't get to because police had the road blocked," he said.
Buttram did not immediately have a count of how many of the nine were affected. He said he assumed parents took the children to school instead and that he had only one phone call from a family asking about the incident.
The driver, Alpha Mathews, 24, of Albany, has been cooperative with law enforcement. There is no indication that drugs or alcohol was a factor.
Linn County Sheriff Bruce Riley called the incident unfortunate for everyone. Deputies continue to investigate the cause.
