The sex crimes trial of a Corvallis man started on Tuesday in Linn County Circuit Court.

Zhivago Caya Rhodes, 38, is accused of two counts of first-degree sex abuse.

The jury trial is scheduled for two days.

The victim in the case is an elementary school-aged girl who Rhodes knew.

The Albany Police Department was the investigating agency in the case, and Rhodes was arrested and arraigned in December.

During his opening statement, Prosecutor George Eder said that an incident in December prompted the girl to tell her older brother about the abuse, and the elementary school-aged brother urged her to tell their grandmother.

“Mr. Rhodes had done this kind of sexual touching to this girl before, but this time, she would tell,” Eder said.

When the grandmother confronted Rhodes about the abuse, he denied the accusation, Eder added.

After police were called and interviewed the girl, a detective arranged for a time to interview Rhodes. He never showed, Eder said, and subsequently was arrested.

The charging document states that the crimes took place between December 2016 and December 2017.

Defense attorney Michael Lowry reserved his opening statement for later in the trial.
