Each of the five stories included here is memorable to me for different reasons.
"The Long Road Home" is the latest installment in a story I've been covering since 2017, chronicling the challenges faced by North Albany's Dianna Howell in her quest to get a new heart after the state's only transplant program shut down.
"Crime Photos Tell Grim Story" attempts to convey the emotional impact of one of the most dramatic days in the monthlong trial of Will Hargrove, convicted in November of murdering his fiancee on a lonely logging road outside Alsea.
"Seeking Sanctuary" explores the issues raised by Safe Camp, a tent city that sprang up next door to a Corvallis church.
"It Happened So Fast" captures the impact of April's Willamette River floods on Jim's Fruit Stand east of Corvallis.
Finally, I've included one of several memorable obituaries I wrote for the paper in 2019. This one is the most meaningful to me, for reasons you'll understand when you read it.
