Albany American Legion Post 10 has made its mortgage payment for May and is working toward paying June’s bill, but financial struggles remain.
The post’s leadership committed to upholding a membership vote in April to keep the post open at its current service level.
“But we also stated, since you voted to keep it open, it’s on their shoulders to make sure it happens,” Commander Chuck Driver said. “My officers have done everything they can do.”
To that end, post supporters have organized a number of events for the next several weeks, some as fundraisers, some as regular activities they’re hoping will draw attention and awareness to Post 10 as a community resource.
Events in May included an American Legion Auxiliary blood drive for the Red Cross, a bowling tournament and a pickleball tournament.
Coming up in June are a golf tournament at the Golf Club of Oregon at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 8; a luncheon celebrating the birthday of the U.S. Army on Saturday, June 14; and various class reunions and graduation parties.
In July, the 40 et 8 plans a gathering, and Post 10’s annual picnic is July 26. More class reunions are slated for August, with a car and bike show on Aug. 2.
Bingo, a regular Post 10 fundraiser, still goes on at 12:30 p.m. each Sunday. This activity also is open to the public.
Driver said the Community Services Consortium has become a partner with the Legion, renting a room at Post 10 to assist veterans. Services will include counseling, computer access, employment training, suicide prevention, Oregon Health Plan signups and other assistance.
“Will that save us? No,” Driver said. “But it is a need that we need to fulfill to the veterans here in town.”
Post members also have once again joined the volunteers serving coffee at the Santiam Rest Area on Interstate 5. Donations are welcome. Post 10 rotates with other volunteer groups to provide this service.
“There again, it’s one of those things that won’t save us,” Driver said, “but it gets our name out there.”
Albany American Legion Post 10 has scheduled a fundraiser golf tournament for Sunday, June 8.
The event starts at 7:30 a.m. at the Golf Club of Oregon.
The tournament is set up for six-member teams with one golf club per person.
Entry fee is $55 per person or $275 per team, and proceeds will go toward the Post 10 mortgage. Sponsorships are also available.
