Linn County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Rodney David assisted a Washington couple whose vehicle and horse trailer became stuck Thursday afternoon in the snow about 29 miles up Quartzville Road.

Accoriding to Linn County Undersheriff Paul Timm, the couple had spent the night at River Bend Campground near Cascadia. They thought the Quartzville route, which they located on a map, would be a shortcut to Highway 22.

Timm said their Sprinter van and the 16-foot horse trailer became stuck in the snow.

The 71-year-old man used a bicycle to ride down the hill to find help. He was picked up by a log truck driver and taken to The Point Restaurant, where he used a telephone to call 911-dispatch and AA Towing.

Deputy David responded to the call and found a 68-year-old woman with a dog in the van. He helped unhook the van and trailer and turned the vehicle around. It was driven downhill to a roadside spot.

AA Towing and David slid the trailer around and moved it to a point where it and the van could be reattached. The couple took a safer route back to Washington.

The incident started about 2 p.m. and the vehicle was back on the road in the proper direction by 11.
