LARAMIE, Wyo. — The Oregon State wrestling team battled tough against No. 12 Wyoming but fell short against the Cowboys, 22-16, in a nonconference dual meet on Sunday inside the Uniwyo Sports Complex.
The afternoon started at 157 pounds with No. 17 Hunter Willits getting the ball rolling for the Beavers. After a stalemate for the majority of the first period, Hunter found a late takedown into a two-point near fall for a 4-0 lead after one. The sophomore controlled the rest of the match for a 10-0 major decision.
Colton Beisley got his first start of the season at 165 pounds against No. 8 Branson Ashworth of Wyoming. Beisley battled but fell to the All-American by fall in the first period.
The Beavers got back on track at 174 pounds thanks do a decision win from Colt Doyle over Hayden Hastings. Doyle secured a first-period takedown, but an escape had the match at 2-1 after one period. An escape in the second period and a ride time point secured the 4-2 decision.
Wyoming picked up its second win of night at 184 as Bob Coleman fell behind after the first period off a late takedown and couldn't overcome the deficit as he lost an 8-2 decision.
Jamarcus Grant made his second start of the season at 197 pounds facing No. 19 Cale Davidson. Grant scored a first-period takedown, but fell by decision 6-2.
No. 4-ranked heavyweight Amar Dhesi made it look easy en route to a 12-6 decision win over Brian Andrews. Dhesi put up three takedowns in the first period and one each in the second and third periods securing the win.
No. 3 Ronnie Bresser kept the pace up for the Beavers at 125 pounds. Bresser faced his second ranked opponent of the weekend in No. 17 Cole Verner, collecting two first-period takedowns. Leading 4-2 after the first, Bresser threw Verner to his back for the pin and a 16-12 lead for Oregon State.
The Cowboys picked up wins at 133, 141 and 149 pounds to earn the dual win.
The Beavers return to Corvallis to take on No. 16 Arizona State in a Pac-12 Conference matchup at 2 p.m. Jan. 20.
