DENTON, Texas — The Oregon State volleyball team bounced back from its first loss of the season with two wins on Saturday at the North Texas Challenge.
The Beavers swept matches against Campbell and New Orleans.
OSU opened the day with a 25-19, 25-21, 25-16 victory over Campbell and improved to 8-1 with a 25-15, 25-12, 25-16 win over New Orleans.
Senior hitter Mary-Kate Marshall once again set the tone for the Beavers on a day in which she was virtually unstoppable. Marshall had 18 kills with just a single error and only 25 attempts to post a .680 hitting percentage against New Orleans.
Fellow hitter Maddie Goings notched eight kills in one of her most effective offensive outings of her career.
“We finished well,” coach Mark Barnard said. “We were a lot better (Saturday) than we were (Friday) night. It was great that we got everyone in playing today. It will be a key for us to have lots of people ready when we get to conference play.”
For the second straight match, Barnard worked to involve his bench including junior setter McKenna Hollingsworth, who made her season debut this weekend after missing the previous two weeks due to injury. Hollingsworth posted a season-best 15 assists, adding a pair of kills and an ace against the Privateers.
“I think Maddie is getting more comfortable,” Barnard said. “We are doing a better job of setting her and she is going to be very important for us to be successful when we get to conference play.”
Against Campbell, Marshall had 16 kills on 29 tries and Goings converted nine kills. Freshman setter Kylee McLaughlin ran the offense producing 30 assists to go with a pair of aces.
The Beavers hit the road again next week when they take part in the Boise State Classic. OSU faces Minnesota (11 a.m.) and Idaho State (6:30 p.m.) on Friday, and take on Boise State (11 a.m.) on Saturday.
