September 15, 1949 — May 8, 2018
Larry Gene Kennel was born in Albany on September 15, 1949 to Joseph Alliman and Katie Rosa Kennel. His proud parents brought him home to their house on the corner of Spicer Drive and Three Lakes Road. They lived there until approximately 1961 when the family exchanged houses with Joseph’s parents, Samuel and Kathryn Kennel, which was just a mile away on Spicer Drive. Larry lived at the Kennel Farm for the majority of his life and passed away at the farm house on May 8, 2018.
Larry went to Grand Prairie Grade School and continued his education in Albany public schools. He graduated from Albany Union High in 1968.
Larry helped his father working the farm. He also worked for three years at the Lebanon Hospital as his part in the Selective Service.
Later, he got his real estate license and worked at that for a while. He also managed a Denny’s in Salem and Portland. However, Larry always ended up back at the family farm.
In his parent’s later years, he became a caretaker and constant companion to them both. Larry never married and was always someone that family members could depend on for help in any way.
He loved people and was known by many and loved by all.
Larry also volunteered for many years at the Albany Soup Kitchen at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was always willing to help the down and out. Often times he would invite people to church or back to his home; many of these were people that the rest of us might have turned our backs on.
Larry was the “sign” man at Fairview Mennonite Church and did that job for almost 20 years, including just a week ago.
Larry was preceded in death by his father Joseph Alliman Kennel in 1996 and his mother Katie Rosa (Kennel) Kennel in 2007.
Larry is survived by his sister, Linda Elaine Kennel; nieces, Nicole (Tim) Teichroeb and Shawna Trocha; as well as 12 great-nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions can be made in Larry’s name to Fairview Mennonite Church or the St. Mary’s soup kitchen.
