Brian Oare is easy to spot in Albany because, no matter the weather or time of year, he’s usually clad in shorts and a Hawaiian shirt — he owns 50 of them.

That casual garb helps out in the real estate business, he said.

“It makes me comfortable, and I’ve found that it makes my clients comfortable,” Oare said. He joked that he may be wearing short pants, but he’s never short on service to clients and the community.

Oare fulfilled a dream on Valentine’s Day by opening up his own office at the edge of downtown Albany, Oare & Associates Realty.

“My life goal when I was right out of high school was wanting to get into real estate and one day getting my own firm. It’s pretty exciting,” Oare said.

His business has the same name as his grandfather’s real estate office, which operated in Florence on the Oregon Coast from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s.

Oare has been in the real estate industry for 12 years, and handles both commercial and residential properties. He previously worked for Coldwell Banker Valley Brokers, as did fellow broker Sheri Baber, who also joined his new office.

Baber has her own clients, but she also handles paperwork and keeps things organized for the office, Oare said.

The current conditions in the housing market — there’s a shortage of homes in the mid-Willamette Valley at the same time employers are expanding — put a premium on realtors with experience and connections, Oare said.

“Albany’s in a weird cycle,” he said.

He knows plenty of people in the community through his volunteer efforts with the Greater Albany Rotary Club, the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce and other organizations.

Oare said he planned to open his own office five or six years ago, but the market conditions weren’t right during what was the height of the recession. “I had to wait a little bit longer,” Oare said.

For the time being, Oare is fine with running a two-person crew.

“Someday, if there are agents that want to come over and work in this office, I’m open to that,” Oare said.

Oare & Associates Realty is at 404 First Ave. SE. For more information, call 541-981-2359 or go to www.brianoare.com.
