Rolling into work on Thursday, about to cross the bridge from Benton County into downtown Albany, I came upon a van that caught my eye for three reasons:

• A left rear window bore the handwritten message, “I love you Mommy.” That the word mommy was misspelled (missing an M) almost added to the charm;

• The dashboard was carpeted with various sheets of paper; myself, I’d find that really distracting but to each his or her own;

• The license plate read “DA WIFE.”

Obviously, if the owner/driver of the van likes the plate, or at least doesn’t mind it, that’s her business.

However, at the risk of reading too much into this, it struck me as it somewhat dehumanizing, implying that a spouse wasn’t so much a human being and partner but a possession.

Any thoughts on this?
