Former Linn County Deputy sentenced

George Sutton, a former Linn County Sheriff’s Office deputy who resigned in May, was sentenced to 14 days in jail and two years probation Wednesday after pleading guilty in Linn County Circuit Court to two counts of first-degree official misconduct, a class A misdemeanor.

Linn County prosecutor George Eder filed the indictment after the Marion County Sheriff's Office conducted an outside investigation, which revealed Sutton, on at least two occasions, used his position of authority to gain favors from female citizens.

The first count described a 2014 incident where Sutton failed to arrest or cite an intoxicated woman after responding to a reckless driving call, and instead gave her a ride home in his patrol car in exchange for favors. The second count described an August, 2015 incident in which Sutton neglected to investigate a domestic violence report in exchange for favors.
