Cyclist strikes vehicle on Pacific Boulevard

A cyclist went to the hospital Friday morning after he illegally tried to cross Pacific Boulevard on the overpass and was struck by a motorist.

Tommy Youmans, 53, was riding his bike westbound around 11:30 a.m. when he elected to cross the road, striking an eastbound Subaru wagon driven by 68-year-old Shelby Harris. The impact of the collision punched a hole through Harris' windshield and left Youmans on the road next to a badly bent-up bicycle.

Youmans is expected to recover from his minor injuries, and Harris, after being examined by paramedics and deemed to be unhurt, elected to be transported to the hospital for further examination. Albany police had the Subaru towed from the scene. Investigators determined that Youmans was at fault.
