SALEM — Seven West Albany High wrestlers made it through to the semifinals after Friday’s action at the Greater Valley Conference championships.
Ethan Tyler (126 pounds), Wyatt French (132), Sawyer Myres (138), Trona Free (152), Mitchell Sorte (160), Bobby Chavez (182) and Caulin Leach (195) will be trying to reach the finals when the two-day tournament wraps up Saturday at McKay High. The top four placers in each weight class qualify for the 6A state championships, which run Feb. 16-17 in Portland.
Sprague, the district’s defending champion, leads the way after Day 1 with a team score of 223.5. McMinnville is second at 116, followed by McNary (111.5), West Albany (110.5) and Forest Grove (103).
A season ago, the Bulldogs finished second at the district tournament.
Finals are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
HARRISBURG — Scio is on track to claim the team title at the 3A Special District 2 championships.
The Loggers collected 111 team points to open the two-day tournament, well ahead of second-place Pleasant Hill (74). Santiam Christian (58), Jefferson (56) and Harrisburg (48) round out the top five.
Scio has 13 total semifinalists at 10 different weight classes. Jefferson put nine competitors into the semis while SC (seven) and Harrisburg (six) aren’t far behind.
The district tournament will conclude Saturday in Harrisburg.
