ALBANY — West Albany High continued its unbeaten streak against the state’s best competition at the South Albany State Preview tournament on Saturday.
The Bulldogs (15-0), top-ranked in 5A volleyball, swept Jesuit in the championship match. Set scores were 25-22, 25-18.
“That’s a first for us,” WA coach Kelli Backer said. “It’s pretty exciting.”
Jesuit (11-4) is ranked No. 4 in 6A.
West Albany reached the championship match after a three-set victory over Lake Oswego. Set scores were 25-18, 22-25, 15-13.
The Bulldogs cruised past Summit, 5A’s No. 3 team, for a 25-5, 25-16 win.
Prior to Lake Oswego’s match with West Albany, the Lakers knocked off the top-ranked 6A team, Central Catholic, in two sets.
“My team today, at any given moment there was a different kid stepping up and getting something done,” Backer said. “They all did an outstanding job. It was a true team effort.”
The longtime tournament at South Albany is traditionally won by one of the 6A schools from the Portland area.
“To go to that tournament and see that competition and come away with a varsity win, that’s pretty special,” Backer said. “It was pretty fun to watch. A great day for us as a team.”
South Albany avenged a five-set loss at Crescent Valley on Tuesday to open bracket play, defeating the Raiders 27-25, 25-13.
The Rebels also earned a three-set victory over North Medford. Set scores were 17-25, 25-11, 15-8.
South Albany ended the tournament with a two-set loss against Pendleton. Set scores were 25-15,
The Raiders knocked off Ashland, 2-1. Set scores were 17-25, 25-19,
South Albany’s Brett Blomberg returned to action in bracket play after missing pool play and two conference games with an ankle injury.
South Albany (10-4) returns to action at West Albany on Tuesday.
