West Albany High’s Mahayla Gamble was named the Greater Valley Conference’s softball pitcher of the year and Ryan Borde the coach of the year in a vote by the conference’s coaches on Monday night.

Joining Gamble on the first team were Hailey Davis (catcher), Ellie Babbitt (infield), Cassie Cosler (infield), McKenzie Kosmicki (outfield) and Presley Jantzi (utility).

April Kingry (outfield) was named to the second team while Sophia Lynn (infield), Riley Ramirez (infield and Lizzy Johnson (infield) all received honorable mention.

The 10 players were the most from one team, as were the six first-team selections.


CORVALLIS — West Albany High won its sixth straight baseball game, handing 5A Crescent Valley, the Mid-Willamette Conference champion, just its second loss of the season and first since March 30.

The Bulldogs (18-9) will face Sunset in the first round of the 6A playoffs next Monday.

Sweet Home 7, South Albany 5

Sweet Home pulled out a nonleague win over the Rebels in eight innings.

The Huskies (15-8) will travel to Brookings-Harbor for a 4A play-in game on Friday.

The Rebels (2-22) have wrapped up the 2018 campaign.

Boys golf

REDMOND — Bryaden Keesee shot a 43-42—85 at Eagle Crest Ridge Course to lead the Sweet Home boys golf team to 11th place after the first round of the 4A state tournament.

Keesee, a freshman, is tied for 22nd.

Jake Hindmarsh had a 41-48—89 and is tied for 33rd while Christopher May had a 50-51—101 (50), Seth Wright a 48-57—105 (52) and Carson Smith a 54-58—112 (55) for the Huskies.

Sweet Home finished with a 380 team score as the top four scores are counted. Valley Catholic leads the field by eight shots after a 317.

The final round takes place Tuesday. The Huskies will begin teeing off at 8 a.m. on No. 10.

Girls golf

CORVALLIS — West Albany junior Anna Schweitzer shot a 42-43—85 in the first round of the 6A state girls golf tournament at Trysting Tree Golf Club.

Schweitzer is tied for 37th heading into Tuesday's final round and will tee off at 12:54 on No. 1.

CORVALLIS — South Albany’s Jessica Armfield had a 46-51—97 and is tied for 22nd after the first day of the 5A state tournament at Trysting Tree Golf Club.

She will tee off on the 10th hole at 7:30 a.m. for the final round on Tuesday.


BANKS — Sweet Home’s Haley May had a 45-44—89 in the first round of the 4A/3A/2A/1A tournament at Quail Valley Golf Course.

She is in tied for 14th place with the final round taking place Tuesday. She will tee off on No. 10 at 1:15 p.m.

Track and field

Santiam Christian's Amanda Preston was second in the 300-meter hurdles at Saturday's West Valley League district track and field meet to qualify for the 3A state meet, which begins Thursday at Hayward Field in Eugene.

Preston finished in 50.08 seconds. She was omitted from the results in Sunday's paper.
