EUGENE — The West Albany High softball team clobbered host South Eugene 25-4 on Monday in its season opener. The game was stopped after six innings by the mercy rule.

Hailey Davis had two homers and eight RBIs, Sophia Lynn was 4-for-4 and Mahayla Gamble was 3-for-3 with four RBIs and was the winning pitcher for the Bulldogs.

West plays at South Albany on Tuesday in a 4:30 p.m. nonleague encounter.

Blanchet Catholic 6, Santiam Christian 5

SALEM — SC lost on a walk-off hit to Blanchet Catholic in its opener.

Josie Risinger and Shae Carley each had a double for the Eagles. Katie Boruf recorded a triple.

The Eagles host Monroe at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in their next game.

Harrisburg 5, Monroe 3

HARRISBURG — Harrisburg opened the 2018 season with a nonleague win over Monroe at HHS.

Harrisburg plays at Taft on Tuesday. Monroe plays at Santiam Christian on Wednesday.

Central Linn 14, Lowell 3

LOWELL — Central Linn opened the season in impressive fashion with a nonleague win at Lowell.

Sydney Northern was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and three RBIs and Makenna Northern was 2-for-3 with a double and a triple for the Cobras.

The Cobras open Tri-River League action at Western Mennonite on Tuesday.

Scio 5, Kennedy 4

SCIO — The Loggers started their season with the nonleague win over Kennedy. Scio hosts Santiam on Wednesday in its next game.

Philomath 9, Sweet Home 3

PHILOMATH — The Warriors topped Sweet Home in the season opener for both teams. 

Philomath hosts Junction City and Sweet Home hosts Stayton on Wednesday in the next game for both teams.


CRESWELL — Creswell topped Jefferson 12-0 in a nonleague game in each team's season-opener. The Lions resume nonleague play at Amity on Wednesday.

Santiam Christian 11, Blanchet Christian 0

ADAIR VILLAGE — Conrad Carter had six strikeouts in four innings to get the win as the Eagles opened their season with a five-inning victory.

Sam Barton was 2-for-3 with a double and Grant Carley had two runs for SC, which hosts Monroe on Wednesday.

Harrisburg 14, Monroe 5

HARRISBURG — Dax Bennett allowed three hits and one run over four innings, striking out eight, and stole three bases to lead the Eagles in their season opener.

Caleb Prater started the game for Harrisburg and allowed no hits and four runs over three innings, striking out two. Kyle Davis and William Downs had two hits apiece; Davis had a double.

Alex Avery and Kai Garber had RBIs for Monroe.

Harrisburg plays at Taft on Tuesday. Monroe plays at Santiam Christian on Wednesday.


AUMSVILLE — Freshman Andrew Liles shot an 89 to lead the West Albany boys at the Salem Area Youth Tournament at Santiam Golf Course.

Nate Ketelson added a 90, Grant Moen a 93, Caulin Leach a 97 and Trenton Crow a 98.

Brandon Eyre of West Salem was the medalist and the Titans won the team title. West Albany resumes action at Michelbook on March 20.

"Nate is the only one who had ever played in a high school tournament, so the other boys had a lot of learning-on-the-fly to do," coach Matt Boase said. "There's some good talent on this team and I expect them to improve every week."

Anna Schweitzer shot a 44 to lead the girls in a nine-hole competition with no team scores. Hannah McClure (53), Bailey Backer (59), Lexi Chido (66) and Katie Rohrbaugh (76) also played for the Bulldogs.


Santiam Christian junior Zach Baugher was named to 3A basketball all-state first team.

De La Salle North Catholic's Emmanuel Reiley was the player of the year and James Broadous II the coach of the year.
