PORTLAND — West Albany High’s season came to an end in the first round of the 6A girls basketball playoffs on Tuesday with an 83-37 loss at No. 7 seed Benson.
The No. 26 Bulldogs trailed 47-14 at the half and 59-22 after three.
Benson (20-5) won the Portland Interscholastic League and will face No. 10 South Medford in the round of 16 on Friday.
West, which was fifth in the Greater Valley Conference, finishes the season 13-12.
Crater 43, South Albany 31
CENTRAL POINT — South Albany had a lead into the third quarter but couldn’t hold it in the 5A play-in loss to the Comets.
The Rebels, the sixth-place team in the Mid-Willamette Conference, had a 24-24 lead until the Comets used back-to-back 3s by Mackenzie Ryerson to take a 29-24 lead. The Comets, third place in the Midwestern League, took a 31-28 edge going to the fourth.
But South, who lost 60-32 at Crater on Dec. 7, was outscored 12-3 in the fourth.
South led 11-10 after one quarter the Rebels hit two jumpers, including a 3 by Katie Mayhue, in the final 26 seconds of the second quarter to take a 22-18 lead at the half.
Crater (20-5) will play in the round of 16 on Friday.
South finishes the season 9-16.
