Here is a look at this week’s slate of high school football games in the mid-valley. All games begin at 7 p.m.
5A round of 16
Ashland at No. 4 West Albany
Records: Ashland 7-3, 5-2 Midwestern League; West Albany 8-1, 6-1 Mid-Willamette Conference
The last time these teams met, West won 75-0 in a 5A round of 16 home game in 2009.
This one will probably be a little closer.
West had a bye last week, while Ashland beat Corvallis 47-7 at home. The Grizzlies also beat Lebanon 23-6 in week two.
Lebanon at No. 1 Sherwood
Records: Lebanon 5-5, 4-3 Mid-Willamette; Sherwood 9-0, 7-0 Northwest Oregon Conference
Lebanon advanced to this week’s round of 16 with a 26-8 win at Bend. Sherwood, the No. 2 team in the power rankings, but the top team in the final Associated Press poll, had last week off.
The Warriors will have their hands full trying to slow down the Bowmen, who have scored at least 35 points in each game and 56 or more five times.
4A round of 16
Philomath at No. 9 Sweet Home
Records: Philomath 8-2, 4-1 Oregon West Conference; Sweet Home 7-2, 5-0 Sky-Em League
Two teams having breakout seasons meet to see who moves on to the quarterfinals.
Sweet Home, coming off a bye, has won eight straight since opening losses to 5A Redmond and 4A Banks, both still alive in the playoffs. The Huskies have scored 42 points or more in their last six games.
Philomath has won five of its last six, including a 56-15 play-in home victory against Brookings-Harbor last week.
3A round of 16
Lakeview/Paisley at Santiam Christian
Records: Lakeview/Paisley 4-5, 2-1 Southern Cascade League; Santiam Christian 8-2, 7-1 PacWest Conference
Santiam Christian begins its run at a second straight state title.
Both teams had about the same success against Cascade Christian, a league rival for the Honkers.
Cascade Christian beat SC 33-7 in week one and got past Lakeview/Paisley 42-7 last Friday.
Clatskanie at Scio
Records: Clatskanie 4-6, 3-1 Lewis & Clark League; Scio 9-1, 8-0 PacWest
Location: North Salem H.S.
Scio, which has had just two close games this season, chases a fourth straight state title game as the playoffs begin.
Clatskanie won four of five games before last week’s 35-16 home loss to Santiam Christian.
2A round of 16
Gaston at Central Linn
Records: Gaston 6-3, 4-1 Northwest League; Central Linn 8-2, 4-1 Tri-River Conference
Central Linn has been held below 42 points twice this season. Both were losses.
Gaston has held its last three opponents to eight points or less.
A Cobras win sets up a possible rematch next week with Kennedy. The Trojans beat Central Linn 14-6 last week for the Tri-River title.
