The South Albany boys basketball team held off a late rally from Sweet Home to earn its first win of the season on Wednesday night, 59-48. The Rebels were led offensively by Jake Costello, who scored 21 points.
Sweet Home started slow but found its footing late in the contest as the Huskies were paced by the 18 points of Colton Smith.
The Rebels (1-0) take on Philomath on Tuesday. The Huskies (0-1) host Douglas on Friday.
Harrisburg 55, Monroe 40
Harrisburg started its season with a nonconference matchup with Monroe and came away victorious thanks to a 21-point outing from Tyler Thompson.
Monroe was paced by Bryan Goracke with 15 points.
The Eagles (1-0) take on Caitlin Gabel on Friday.
The Dragons (1-0) travel to Santiam on Friday.
Lowell 49, East Linn Christian 47
LOWELL — Lowell edged East Linn Christian in both teams' season opener. ELC (0-1) plays Portland Christian in its Silver Cross Tournament on Friday in the Eagles' next start.
Scio 50, St. Paul 34
SCIO — Scio topped St. Paul 50-34 in the season opener for both teams. The Loggers (1-0) play at Creswell on Thursday night in their next game.
Waldport 63, Jefferson 57
JEFFERSON — Waldport edged Jefferson in a nonleague game in the season opener for both teams. The Lions (0-1) play at Gaston on Friday.
The South Albany girls basketball team had no trouble getting its offense flowing as the Rebels recorded a 77-37 victory over Sweet Home on Wednesday night.
The Rebels (1-0) travel to Beaverton on Tuesday.
The Huskies (0-1) host Douglas on Friday.
Lebanon 61, Redmond 34
Lebanon started its season with a complete offensive and defensive performance as it rolled past Redmond for an opening-night victory.
The Warriors (1-0) take on Ridgeview on Saturday.
Jefferson 59, Waldport 37
JEFFERSON — Jefferson started its season on a winning note as it defeated Waldport for its first win of the season. The Lions started strong as they seized control of the game with strong first and second quarters en route to the victory.
Jefferson was led by Cassie Aguilar and Alyssa Guzman with 17 and 15 points, respectively.
The Lions (1-0) take on Gaston on Friday.
St. Paul 47, Scio 22
SCIO — Scio opened the season with a nonconference loss to St. Paul. The Loggers (0-1) host Creswell in another nonleague game on Thursday.
Monroe 60, Harrisburg 34
HARRISBURG — Monroe kicked off its season with a 60-34 victory over Harrisburg in a nonleague game at HHS.
Madison Ballard led Monroe with 22 points. Mallory Campbell scored 8 to lead the Eagles.
The Dragons (1-0) play at Santiam on Friday night. Harrisburg (0-1) travels to Catlin Gabel on Friday in its next game.
