LEBANON - It looked like this one might just go the way of the home team.

But the visitors made just enough plays to escape with the win.

AB Cowan's 25-yard field goal with 10.3 seconds left gave sixth-ranked Glencoe a 36-35 victory against Lebanon in a 5A football first-round playoff game.

The Warriors (5-6) led for the final 14 minutes of the game before Cowan's kick sneaked just inside the left upright.

Glencoe (9-2) used up the last six minutes on the clock on a 17-play drive that Cowan finished to send the Crimson Tide into a second-round game at Bend next week.

"I thought it was ours," Lebanon senior Adam Colwell said. "Things don't always go your way, you've got to make the best of it."

Lebanon went ahead for the first time on quarterback Benjamin Duerr's 9-yard touchdown run with 5:56 remaining in the third quarter.

The score capped an eight-play, 50-yard drive on the Warriors' first possession of the second half.

Glencoe, the third seed from a loaded Northwest Oregon Conference, answered with its own score but failed on the extra point, leaving Lebanon with a 28-27 advantage.

The Warriors came back with another score on their next drive, this time on a Duerr 10-yard run that finished a four-play, 55-yard drive.

Duerr's point-after kick put Lebanon up 35-27 late in the third.

Glencoe closed the gap on Tanner Apeland's third touchdown pass to Hayden Plinke with 8:06 left.

But the Warriors came up with a big stop on the two-point conversion.

Apeland tossed a screen pass to Cole Johnson, who was met at the goalline and stuffed by Dalton Urrutia, Will Moseley and Alex Patterson.

Lebanon failed to get a first down, giving Glencoe the ball back with 6:20 left.

Apeland, who was 18 of 28 passing for 346 yards, completed five passes on the drive, including three to Kory Kirwan.

The Crimson Tide converted two fourth-down plays and one on third down to keep the possession going.

After Cowan's kick, the Warriors had one play from their own 34.

But Duerr's pass was intercepted, and Glencoe ran out the clock with one final snap.

"We knew it was going to be a shootout. They have some great offensive skill kids. They execute real well," Lebanon coach Rob Allen said. "The defense did real well. You just had a breakdown here or broke down there."

Duerr and Colwell each rushed for 123 yards to lead the Warriors, who were making their first playoff appearance since a run to the state semifinals in 2006.

Duerr, a sophomore who was Lebanon's third quarterback this season, rushed for three touchdowns and passed for another.

Lebanon finished third in the Mid-Willamette Conference after going 2-8 in 2008 with just one conference win.

"They came back and made the playoffs," Allen said of his team. "Our seniors and our juniors did a great job working together to make sure we gave our seniors the best chance that they had."
