SAN DIEGO — Too many miscues proved to be Oregon State’s undoing in a 7-4 nonconference baseball loss at University of San Diego on Thursday at Fowler Park.
The No. 2 Beavers (21-3) committed a season-high five errors that erased a solid evening at the plate, sparked by Kavin Keyes.
Keyes led off the fourth inning with a solo home run to right. It was the second home run of Keyes’ career and put the Beavers up 4-3.
The Beavers had nine hits with Keyes going 2 for 4.
The Toreros, however, scored the game’s final four runs for the win. Five of the seven runs scored by San Diego on the night were unearned as the Toreros took advantage of OSU’s defensive struggles.
The first of two triples for Louie Lechich, coming in the sixth, proved to be the game winner, breaking the 4-4 tie.
San Diego collected seven hits on the night, led by Kris Bryant’s three.
Max MacNabb worked 11/3 innings of relief for San Diego to pick up the win and improve to 2-2 this season. Taylor Starr took the loss after allowing three hits and an unearned run. He is 0-1 on the year.
Neither starter figured in the game’s decision after both got knocked out early. Dan Child worked 31/3 innings for the Beavers and allowed one hit but walked four. He allowed three runs.
Child walked in a run and hit a batter with the bases loaded in the second. He gave up his first home run of the season in the third, a solo shot to Bryant.
San Diego (17-9) starter Michael Wagner gave up eight hits and four runs in 51/3 innings. He walked two and struck out seven. Wagner allowed RBI singles by Andy Peterson and Michael Conforto as the Beavers tied the game in the third. OSU temporarily went up 3-2 on a sacrifice fly by Dylan Davis.
The teams continue the series tonight.
