Some people say that Measure 101 is not a tax. Well, tax or assessment it still comes down to the same thing. The organizations that are assessed have to make a profit, so they raise the costs of their care or services to the customers that they take care of. To me it seems like the same thing as a tax.
Terry Weiss (Mailbag, Jan. 17) brings up the point that the federal funds match the funds 7 to 1. Would you tell me where that money comes from? (Maybe there is a fund fairy that gives it to the state?). Why not be honest about the whole thing and call it a social program and put it up as a tax bill and let the people vote for it? It will pass because Portland and Eugene will out vote the rest of the state.
It is horrible that our present governor and the liberal government have to try and trick the people into supporting all of these social programs.
