Re: Don't Blame the NRA (Mailbag, March 1):
Mr. Nofiziger, I do hold the NRA accountable. Your defense is full of inaccuracies and half truths. I have heard NRA members say, "Your dead children do not trump my gun rights." The NRA responses to gun violence are always reactive: if we arm people, we can shoot the attacker after he has started his attack. That is like saying we can improve traffic safety by having more ambulances.
Former NRA President Marion Hammer has made a career out of opposing any proactive legislation to deal with gun violence in this country. National, comprehensive background checks (once supported by the NRA) have been opposed by the NRA and their legislative lackies. It is not the elegant, final solution, but is one brick in building a safer environment. We need one without all the loopholes that allow people to get around a check.
Your specious argument about "mass shooters being Democrats" is based on what? The is no credible evidence to support that. I have seen the memes circulated online, but they are filled with factual errors, such as Lincoln being assassinated in 1863 by a Democrat. It was 1865 and he was a member of the No-Nothing-Party.
The proactive solutions will not prevent every shooting, but that is no reason not to take those actions.
