In this morning’s DH (Oct. 24), in the bottom right corner of Page 7, was an article headlined, “EPA stops scientists’ planned talk on report.”

I feel this news deserved much more prominent placement as this is news of government silencing the free speech of American citizens. The fact that these citizens are also scientists does not make this anything but an outrageous assault on their freedom to speak. The scientists were to discuss a report on the health of New England’s largest estuary, which is being negatively affected by climate change. Underscore climate change.

The director of the EPA, Scott Pruitt, has a legal background but no scientific training. He has made it clear that he does not believe climate change is connected to human activity and has in the past taken legal action against the agency that he now runs. He opposes any regulation of pollutants including toxic lead, arsenic and others.

Even if he does not join the vast majority of scientists who have repeatedly documented a changing climate, surely he should allow these people who are educated in science to make up their own minds about what they hear.
