There has been a lot of discussion about changing the name and/or mascot of our local schools.
It seems that nobody is up in arms about the names/mascots of the Atlanta Braves or the Cleveland Indians of the Major League baseball organization.
In the National Football League, there are the Washington Redskins and the Kansas City Chiefs. Again, no huge amount of stir about getting them to change their names or their mascots.
So, why is there such interest in making a long-established and harmless name or mascot for our local schools be changed to be politically correct.
I attended Albany Union High School in the ‘50s and still support the efforts of both high schools. I see no need to change the name of South Albany High just to satisfy a few zealots who want to be politically correct.
After all, there is tradition at stake here. Go, Bulldogs. Go Rebels. Go Lebanon Warriors!
