With all of the politically correct rhetoric out there regarding school mascots, I just can't hold it in any longer. Some will agree with me and some will not. And that's OK.
South Albany no longer has the Rebels and Portland no longer has the Quakers. We've now lost, or will lose, the Red Raiders, Axemen, Indians, Black Tornado, Cavemen, Antlers, Fishermen and, I'm sure, many more will follow.
This brings up a concern for the West Albany Bulldogs. Bull refers to male, as I'm sure you know, for such species as cattle, the hippopotamus, elk and sperm whales. This cannot continue. How about these Western Oregon suggestions as a replacement for Bulldogs: the West Albany Spreading Moss, or the Rampaging Rye Grass, or (this one will put fear in the minds of all foes), the WA Poison Oaks.
Someday even the PIL Jefferson Democrats may have to consider a name change. But, wait, this is Oregon so that probably won't happen.
Just saying.... come on people, get over yourselves and leave well enough alone. Don't we have far greater issues to consume our time, like homelessness, North Korea, the Middle East, and health care, just to name a few. This obsession with mascot names may get out of control and become a priority. Oops, it already has.
Can't wait for the replies to this one.
