My question to you, Dr. Robert Harris (Mailbag, April 11), and to you, Bert Guptil (Mailbag, April 13), is this: Have you read Oregon Initiative Petition 43 being pushed to ban any weapon, pistol or rifle, including rimfire .22's, which can accept a magazine holding more than 10 rounds. Further, the document states: "Any grip of the weapon, including a pistol grip, a thumb hole stock or any other stock, the use of which would allow an individual to grip the weapon, resulting in any finger on the trigger hand in addition to the trigger finger being directly below any portion of the action of the weapon when firing;..."
This document basically calls any semi-automatic rifle of any caliber an "assault rifle," only by its appearance, not by any specific caliber or function. A Ruger 10-22 accepts magazines exceeding 10 rounds, therefore it too fits the prohibited category. Further, any pistol which can accept a magazine exceeding 10 rounds is also included.
Placing these words in this document is either by intent or by appalling ignorance.
And the biggest question for you is this: If enacted, and criminals, murderers, home invasion gangs and drug pukes continue their use of guns, what will be the next demand on lawful owners?
Does registration, licensing and fees on cars stop reckless driving, auto thefts, people texting on their cellphones, tailgating, car hijackings, car accidents and deaths? No! People who break laws do so until caught.
Stealing law-abiding gun owners' property is what Initiative Petition 43 proposes.
