I was pleased to see Vice President Mike Pence making a symbolic gesture of helping with the clean up in Texas and interacting with victims of Harvey. Empathy and humility are the virtues our politicians need to show during these times. Sure, Pence’s efforts made little difference in the grand scope of this disaster; however, his willingness to roll up his sleeves, get his hands dirty, and console people who had just suffered a disaster beyond the imagination of most of us sent the right message. Unfortunately, his boss does not get it.
Anyone aspiring to the presidency has a strain of narcissism, but unless it is tempered with a huge dose of compassion, and responsibility, then that aspirant is destined to fail. I just do not see empathy, humility, compassion, and responsibility on the tool kit inventory of our current president. Sad.
