Writer David Mears (Mailbag, Sept. 22) gives us an excellent example of the logical concept of False Equivalence, in his satire on bulldogs as being a harmful school name.
His "satire" is attempting to show that because it's silly to think that bulldogs can cause problems in being a school team name, that the nickname of a separatist army is silly as well. Just because a lot of people in the area haven't thought of the South Albany High School Rebels in that vein, doesn't mean that it's passed a statute of limitations, in it's implications. Especially now, that white supremacy is coming out from under the rocks again. Because that is what the term Johnny Rebel means.
Would people be okay with a high school team name of the Irish Republican Army, or IRA for short? How about the Boxer Rebellion? The name Rebels falls into that category.
Of course, if we modified it to the James Dean Rebels, it would change the mindset enough!
