A man convicted of sex crimes in Linn County has unexpectedly died in prison, and though there are no signs of foul play, the Oregon Department of Corrections is conducting a routine investigation into the matter.
David Kirby, 38, of Albany, was found unresponsive in his housing unit at Eastern Oregon Correction Institution in Pendleton at about 8:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Medical staff immediately began life-saving efforts until outside medical services arrived and continued to no avail, according to a news release.
Kirby was sent to prison in September 2015 after pleading guilty to two counts of first-degree sodomy. He was sentenced to nearly 17 years in prison.
The victims of the case were two boys, and the crimes occurred between 2004 and 2006. The Linn County Sheriff’s Office arrested Kirby.
EOCI houses more than 1,700 male inmates. Few other details about Kirby’s death were available on Monday morning.
