Illegal marijuana charge — 3 p.m. Tuesday. Linn County Courthouse. George Joseph Nelson, 42, was arraigned on charges of manufacturing "a marijuana item," meaning he created canabanoids without a license and in violation of state standards for the legal substance.
Aggravated harassment charge — 3 p.m. Tuesday. Cassandra Nicole Hamilton, 32, was charged with aggravated harassment. The Class C felony charge stems from an Aug. 28 incident in which Hamilton is alleged to have been acting erratically on foot in the middle of Pacific Boulevard, holding up traffic with her behavior. When an Albany Police officer approached her, she allegedly spat on him and was arrested. At her arraignment, Hamilton began to shout and asked to be placed in a state hospital. Defense lawyer Kent Hickam asked the court to release Hamilton so that she may continue her mental health treatment, arguing she does not belong in the criminal justice system. Judge Thomas McHill sympathized, but cited the seriousness of the charge when he ordered Hamilton held on $5,000 security. Hamilton next began to hit herself, and had to be subdued by corrections deputies. McHill set her next hearing date for Sept. 5.
