Volunteers are needed at the Monteith House in Albany to decorate the historic house for the holidays.

Donations for the museum also are requested, and society members are invited to the annual meeting.

Workers should arrive around noon on Saturday, Nov. 28, at the house, 518 Second Ave. S.W. Those who can supply greenery are asked to call Oscar B. Hult, president of the Monteith Historical Society, at (541) 979-9108.

Workers will decorate a Christmas tree, make swags for the doorways, decorate the mantels and make wreathes.

Hot cider and cookies will be available to “keep volunteers fueled up and ready to go,” he said.

Volunteers also are wanted to dress in period clothing during the 30th annual Christmas Parlour Tour on Dec. 13.

Members of the historical society have compiled a list of items needed to make the 160-year-old home more authentic, Hult said. Donations would be used to improve displays and be available during living history events.

To make arrangements to donate something or to purchase an item for donation, contact Rebecca Bond at the Albany Visitors Association, (541) 928-0911.

All donations must be approved by the society to ensure authenticity.

Items needed include a 5-quart bean pot, wooden barrels, stoneware dishes, tin tea kettle and coffee pot, pie safe or hutch, chandelier for the kitchen, pie tins, a chicken coop and river rock for around the herb bed.

Also needed are period framed artwork or prints, lamp and fern stands, display cases, an 1860s-era bedroom mirror, acid-free tissue and archival boxes.

The historical society is a nonprofit organization, so donations are tax deductible.

This year’s annual meeting starts at 6 p.m. Dec. 14 at Ciddici’s Pizza, 133 Fifth Ave. S.E.

Hult will make a short presentation about the museum’s living history program, which will be followed by a pizza feed.

He said the society has offered history programs for 10 years that are open to children and adults. Interpreters explain daily life and perform chores from the pioneer era.

Anyone interested in joining the society and serving on the board can call Amanda Pool at (541) 908-2107.

The Monteith House was built in 1849 by Thomas and Walter Monteith, co-founders of the city of Albany. The house was the first wood-frame building constructed in Albany.
