CORVALLIS — Oregon State University’s forensics team tied for first place with Humboldt State University in the Four Year College/University Sweepstakes at the 37th annual Smelt Classic Speech and Debate Tournament at Lower Columbia College last week.

The tournament featured more than 15 schools from around the country.

Two students from the mid-valley also took home individual awards:

• Andrew Leder of Albany took first place in open impromptu speaking and second place in open extemporaneous speaking. He also earned a gold medal in open debate.

• Daniel Meiwes of Corvallis received a silver medal in open debate.
