SWEET HOME - The Sweet Home School Board said Monday it isn't interested in selling the former Pleasant Valley Kindergarten for at least another year.
The organization that runs Little Promises school and daycare currently leases Pleasant Valley. It has asked whether the Sweet Home School District would sell the property, either the building and all of the 8.43 acres, or the building and a portion of it.
"I certainly support the renewal of the lease, but I'm adamantly opposed to the sale of the property," board member Don Hopkins said.
The property is valuable, he said, and the district's enrollment is uncertain at the moment, especially with a 434-lot subdivision planned for property between the South Santiam River and Clark Mill Road.
"There's too many unknowns out there," he said.
Other board members said they agreed.
The district closed Pleasant Valley in 2002, citing budget cuts. Little Promises moved in this past year and is leasing the building on a year-by-year basis. The district retains responsibility for maintenance and upkeep.
Superintendent Larry Horton said the district spoke with representatives of the Clark Mill Road subdivision and learned they plan to sell mainly to retirees and people looking for a resort area to build a second home.
That means a huge influx of students isn't likely, Horton said, but using the average of 150 new students over a seven-year period, he said the district probably can accommodate the growth within existing buildings.
In other business Monday, the board:
• Unanimously approved a one-year renewal of the city's lease of the skatepark property, adjacent to the school district office on Long Street.
The park's lease was to be reviewed after the first year, but construction delays kept the park from opening until just two months ago. Another year is needed for an adequate evaluation, Horton said.
• Received three proposed policies to address a change in Oregon law prohibiting tobacco on school campuses at any time. Horton said he'd bring the staff-recommended policy to the next board meeting for discussion.
• Noted that four positions remain open on the school district's budget committee. Joe Graville, Ken Turner and Scott Weld, who represented Holley and two at-large positions, are eligible to serve a second term but have not yet confirmed their interest. The fourth open position is for a representative from Foster.
