An Albany resident attempting to stop Tuesday at the Dari Mart at Queen and Hill for a cigarette lighter drove over the parking curb and through a pole, shattering one of the front windows to the business.
The 1994 brown Mazda pickup was driven by Richard Milligan, 89.
At about 12:30 p.m, manager Shelley Britton was in her office at the back of the building talking with the maintenance staff when, "the whole building shook."
She said there was a loud crash. "It scared everyone."
A witness told police the pickup went over the parking curb, hit a support pole for the sidewalk overhang, and went through the window.
According to the police report, witnesses said the front two wheels of the Mazda were inside the store at one point, but the driver quickly reversed and the pickup returned to the parking space.
The window was 111 inches wide and 55 inches tall.
Britton said that to her knowledge people have bent the poles before, but never knocked them out.
"We're lucky nobody was hurt," she said, and referenced the fatal crash at the Perfect Look salon Friday in the Albany Fred Meyer shopping center.
Milligan was a bit shaken and a little embarrassed, but unharmed.
"Never had any accidents in my life," he said.
There were no citations issued, but police are submitting the incident to DMV and recommending a driver retest.
