Heavy fog is being blamed for causing numerous wrecks around the mid-valley this morning, resulting in two injuries.
Oregon State Police and the Halsey-Shedd Fire Department were called to a collision at 6:30 a.m. on Highway 99E at Linn-West Drive north of Halsey.
Fire Capt. Michael Nokes said a Knife River truck and trailer collided with a pickup at the intersection. The Knife River driver, Eddie Coleman, 65, of Albany was not injured, said OSP Sgt. Craig Flierl.
The driver of the pickup, Shawn Lawyer, 29, of Sandy suffered head injuries. An Albany ambulance took him to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis. He was treated and released.
The sergeant said Lawyer was cited for failing to stop at a stop sign.
At 7:38 a.m., a semi-truck carrying a container box and an older Datsun 710 station wagon collided on Highway 34 at the Columbus Street intersection.
State police trooper Kevin Markey said the Datsun driver, Candice DiGiulio, 20, of Corvallis was taken by Albany ambulance to the hospital in Corvallis. Flierl said she had severe but non-life threatening injuries.
He said she was cited for excessive speed under extremely foggy conditions. DiGiulio told OSP she was going about 50 miles an hour.
The driver of the semi - which had the name Bob Hulbert on the door - Jon Titus, 27, of Gates was not injured, the trooper said.
Markey said DiGiulio was westbound on Highway 34 when the semi pulled out in front of her. The truck driver blamed the fog, saying he did not see the blue car coming toward him.
He was halfway into the intersection when the vehicles collided. The force of the crash bent the rear axle of the truck and crushed the left front of the Datsun.
The Jefferson Fire Department was called to two wrecks this morning. No injuries were reported at either one, said Tammy Robbins, administrative assistant.
The first occurred at 7:45 a.m. on Highway 99E just past Wintercreek Road, when a car missed a turn and went into a ditch.
Then at 8:30 a.m., two cars collided on Highway 99E in front of the Jefferson Baptist Church. Robbins did not know the circumstances, only that fog was involved.
Another wreck early this morning involved cattle.
Linn County Sheriff's Sgt. Art Sprague said at 1:15 a.m., the driver of a Toyota Avalon struck two black cows in the 32500 block of Diamond Hill Road near Harrisburg. The driver, Shane Allen Hargett, 40, of Greenleaf, was not injured. It appears "a large herd" of cows were on the roadway, Sprague said. He did not know the fate of the cows.
